The study included five primary and specialty safety net clinics. The analysis included 25 clinicians and 25 patients. Researchers recorded clinic visits three to 16 months after the implementation of a fully functional EHR.
Two researchers coded visits into various categories, including:
● Multitasking EHR use (where the clinician or patient spoke)
● Silent EHR use (with three or more seconds of silence)
● Non-EHR multitasking
● Focused patient-clinical talk
The median visit length was 20.6 minutes.
The study shows that multitasking EHR use comprised 30.5 percent of visit time, while silent EHR use took up 4.6 percent of the time.
Additionally, non-EHR multitasking took up 4.3 percent of the time and focused patient-clinical talk comprised 33.1 percent of visit time.
