Clinician at Connecticut's Hospital of Saint Raphael Texts Photo of Murdered ER Patient

A clinician at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Conn., texted a photo of deceased 17-year-old Travis Washington, who died in the hospital's emergency room from a gunshot wound, according to a New Haven Independent report.

The report said the hospital fired three employees due to the incident, but the names of the disciplined employees have not been released. A hospital spokesperson said a clinician took the photo of Washington, who had been shot several times in the chest but died soon after making it to the hospital's ER. That clinician then shared it with another Saint Raphael staff member, who went on to share it with other individuals as well.

Virginia Robinson, Washington's mother, is considering suing the hospital for the patient privacy breach, which could fall under state confidentiality laws as well as HIPAA, the report says. The report also says the hospital, which has offered to help with funeral costs, recovered the images during an investigation and has since deleted them.
