The digital health initiative aims to replace traditional workplace wellness programs as they fail to decrease the amount of health-related spending by large employers, said Bryce Williams, Blue Shield of California vice president of lifestyle medicine, according to CNBC.
The healthcare insurer, which serves more than 4 million people in California, collaborated with health technology startup Solera Health on the new service. With the offering, called Wellvolution, plan members can log in to an online portal and fill out a survey that asks about the individual’s health goals. Members will then receive a recommendation for a service or app that is covered under the health plan, which they can choose to stop or switch at anytime.
Wellvolution offers approximately 70 digital health apps as part of the program, all of which are available on Apple’s App Store. The apps are designed for a range of health topics, such as stress management and sleep quality. In-person care resources provided through Wellvolution include gym memberships and weight management classes.
