The payor allegedly printed SSNs on letters that were mailed to more than 33,000 of its Medicare Supplement and Medicare Part D subscribers from April 2011 through March 2012 — a violation of a state law restricting the disclosure of SSNs.
Anthem notified those subscribers whose SSNs were visible through the envelopes and offered them a year of free credit monitoring services. Under the settlement, Anthem is also required to provide enhanced data security training for its associates and implement new safeguard and data management techniques.
