Big tech, EHR vendors, health systems meet to discuss making patient data more accessible

The CARIN Alliance, a group of more than 85 multisector stakeholders, will meet Jan. 27 to discuss its priorities to give patients more opportunity to access their data.

In its key request, the alliance is asking government officials to finalize and release the CMS and Office of the National Coordinator proposed rules and the 21st Century Cures Act.

"Although we may slightly differ in the specific details regarding how the proposed rules should be implemented, we are united regarding consumer access sections of the two proposed rules and in our belief that both proposed rules should be finalized and released immediately," CARIN Alliance said in a statement.

The alliance believes that if patients have more access to their healthcare information, they will be able to make more informed decisions about their care, including to find affordable, higher quality care. To do this, the CARIN Alliance suggests health systems use a national identity standard.

Along with promoting patient data accessibility, the group is also developing measures to keep the information safe. The group recommends the public and private sectors use advanced, modern-day technologies to secure and protect health information.

The CARIN Alliance has also created a code of conduct with suggestions from 60 stakeholders, including health plans, hospitals, third-party apps, consumer advocacy organizations and others. The code of conduct is designed to hold organizations accountable for securing consumers' health data.
