Apple has denied China’s request for source code, lawyer says

Apple’s top lawyer has said that over the past two year, the company never fulfilled China’s request for source code, according to Reuters.

“I want to be very clear on this,” said Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell, according to the report. “We have not provided source code to the Chinese government.”

The denial follows U.S. law enforcement officials’ recent claims that Apple has been giving information to China’s government. The claims reemerged in a hearing by the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee this week.

Apple, meanwhile, has denied the claims and said they’re likely based on its battle with the FBI in unlocking the iPhone of one of the gunmen in the December 2015 San Bernardino attacks that killed 14 people.

When reached for comment, Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said she did “not understand” the specific elements of the situation, according to Reuters.
