The state of Utah has analyzed the results of the first four months of a pilot program allowing AI to renew prescriptions.
Here are six updates about the program, a partnership between the Utah Department of Commerce’s Office of AI Policy and AI startup Doctronic, per a May report:
1. In 72% of cases, the AI recommended prescription renewal, sending the matter to a human physician for review.
2. The physician agreed the renewal was appropriate 91% of the time.
3. The physician wanted more information the other 9% of the time, such as confirmatory lab results and more symptom details, and scheduled a telehealth visit.
4. In 28% of cases, patients were escalated to a human physician for factors including needing new lab work, presenting complications, and too long a gap since their last healthcare visit.
5. Physicians agreed the escalation was appropriate 69% of the time and requested more information from patients.
6. Physicians thought the escalation was overly cautious the remaining 31% of the time.
