UC San Diego has launched the Institute for Applied Health Intelligence, a multidisciplinary initiative aimed at using AI and other digital technologies to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
The institute will bring together experts from UC San Diego Health and faculty across six academic schools to develop and implement AI-enabled healthcare solutions, according to a July 6 university news release. The effort is designed to translate health data into practical insights while advancing research, education and clinical care.
The institute will be led by Amy Sitapati, MD, Lawrence S. Friedman Professor of Population Health at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, who will serve as its inaugural director.
The Institute for Applied Health Intelligence will unite faculty from the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Rady School of Management, Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and Computing, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science.
In addition to the academic schools, the institute will collaborate with specialized centers including the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the School of Medicine’s Division of Biomedical Informatics. The initiative also plans to work with the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, the Center for Healthcare Cybersecurity and the Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health, according to the news release.
UC San Diego said the institute will focus on three strategic areas: developing leaders to oversee large-scale digital transformation initiatives, expanding education and training programs in health intelligence, and advancing AI-enabled research in personalized medicine and population health.
The university said it aims to bring together more than 50 faculty members and support 750 trainees through the institute as part of its broader effort to expand AI-enabled healthcare innovation.
