Trump eyes AI executive order

President Donald Trump wrote in a Dec. 8 Truth Social post that he plans to issue an executive order on artificial intelligence this week.

The executive order would establish a single, national artificial intelligence standard for the U.S.

“I will be doing a ONE RULE Executive Order this week,” President Trump wrote. “You can’t expect a company to get 50 approvals every time they want to do something. THAT WILL NEVER WORK!”

He said the order is intended to ensure the U.S. maintains its leadership in AI.

“We are beating all countries at this point in the race, but that won’t last long if we are going to have 50 states, many of them bad actors, involved in rules and the approval process,” President Trump wrote. “There can be no doubt about this!”

Politico reported Dec. 8 that a draft executive order aimed at blocking state-level AI regulations was leaked in November. The leak has reignited debate over the federal government’s role in overseeing the rapidly evolving technology, and whether a national framework should preempt state and local laws.
