NIH Adds 55B Pieces of Genome Data to Online Database

The National Institute of Health’s database of Genotypes and Phenotypes now includes the genetic data linked to medical information from the Genetic Epidemiology Research on Aging, one of the biggest, most diverse genome projects in the country.

GERA, developed by Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanante and University of California, San Francisco, compiles data from genome-wide scans to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms. The genetic data was then combined with information from the electronic health record and survey data on participants’ health behaviors.

The GERA database is a step forward in researching genomics and analyzing how genetic makeup affects individuals’ health, offering approximately 55 billion pieces of genetic data, according to the news release.
