The National Academy of Medicine has appointed a national steering group to guide a two-year initiative on patient safety in the era of AI, set to launch in spring 2026.

The initiative aims to explore how AI can be strategically deployed to prevent harm and strengthen core safety practices across the U.S. healthcare system, according to a Dec. 11 news release. The effort will produce foundational analyses and a national strategy focused on systemwide improvements. It will also include a landscape assessment of safety progress and an analysis of domestic and international frameworks.

The steering group consists of leaders from top health systems, including Mayo Clinic and CommonSpirit Health, along with other leaders in healthcare, technology and patient advocacy. The group is tasked with ensuring the initiative’s recommendations are actionable and aligned with the needs of the field.
