Mount Sinai develops AI tool for faster cancer image analysis

New York City-based Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has developed an artificial intelligence-powered image analysis tool, MARQO, to accelerate cancer tissue processing.

The tool works by extracting cellular and spatial information from tumor tissue slides. It supports immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining methods and is compatible with standard graphics processing units, allowing full-slide analysis in minutes with no patching or advanced computing clusters, according to an Aug. 25 news release.

The platform also automates detection of likely positive cells and assigns coordinates and marker intensities, handing off final validation to pathologists to preserve expert oversight. While not currently validated for clinical diagnostics, MARQO is designed for research use and can support large-scale studies involving millions of digitized slides. 

Mount Sinai plans to expand MARQO’s capabilities with improved user interfaces and advanced spatial analysis features.
