A bipartisan group of federal lawmakers has introduced a bill they say would extend the availability of healthcare AI to rural Americans and seniors.
The Health Tech Investment Act would assign all FDA-approved AI-enabled devices a temporary payment classification for a minimum of five years, pending the sufficient collection of cost data and the issuance of a permanent CMS payment code.
“Innovation is the bedrock of American healthcare, and I have always worked to ensure that all patients receive access to innovative medicines and devices,” said bill sponsor U.S. Rep. John Joyce, MD, R-Pa., in a November news release. “The bipartisan Health Tech Act will ensure that American patients, regardless of rural or urban care settings, can access new, innovative AI-enabled medical devices that are revolutionizing healthcare.”
