Google is expanding its use of AI across healthcare, announcing new investments and product updates aimed at improving access to information and clinician training.
At its annual “Check Up” health event March 17, the company said it will commit $10 million through Google.org to support organizations working to integrate AI into medical education, with the goal of improving patient care and preparing clinicians for a technology-driven healthcare environment.
The funding will support groups including the Council of Medical Specialty Societies and the American Academy of Nursing, which will collaborate on rethinking how clinicians are trained as AI becomes more embedded in care delivery, according to a company press release.
Google also outlined broader efforts to use AI to improve access to healthcare, particularly in rural communities. The company said it is exploring partnerships in Arkansas with the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine and the Heartland Whole Health Institute to develop new models for rural health transformation. The initiative will focus on clinician education, care delivery and research, with the intent of creating a model that could be applied more broadly.
In addition to investments in education and partnerships, Google highlighted updates to its consumer-facing platforms. The company said it is continuing to enhance Google Search, where users ask more than 1 billion health-related questions daily, by using AI to make information more reliable and easier to understand.
On YouTube, which has surpassed 1 trillion views for health-related videos globally, Google is introducing AI-powered features to support learning. An “Ask” function on certain videos allows users to interact with content, such as requesting simplified explanations of complex medical topics.
The company also said it is experimenting with AI tools that can help organize peer-reviewed scientific information and suggest ways to present it to broader audiences.
