Can AI help patients understand test results?

Researchers from Aurora, Colo.-based UCHealth are studying whether AI can effectively and accurately deliver test results to patients.

Through the 21st Century Cures Act, patients must receive immediate notification of test results, but that is often before providers have a chance to translate them.

“We all have to adapt to the new landscape of patients receiving results immediately, which is positive for the vast majority of patients,” said CT Lin, MD, chief medical informatics officer of UCHealth, in a June 26 news release. “Viewing these results before speaking with the doctor increases worry in 8% of patients. At present, we do not do a good job helping the 8% with their worry.”

That’s where AI could play a role. UCHealth researchers are having patients review radiologist reports summarized by AI, while another pilot study at the health system analyzed whether ChatGPT could translate brain, spine, neck, and head-and-neck CT and MRI imaging reports into language patients could understand.
