Boston Children’s Hospital has reclaimed about 60,000 hours from AI-enabled workflows since partnering with OpenAI at the enterprise level, saving over $7 million in redeployed labor.
The pediatric health system, an early ChatGPT user, has also employed the developer’s AI tools to diagnose more than 40 rare conditions that had previously gone unresolved and launched 50-plus automations to support operational workflows.
“We combine genetic information, phenotypic information, literature search, and the reasoning of AI to deliver diagnoses to families that were once left without any answers,” said John Brownstein, PhD, senior vice president and chief innovation officer of Boston Children’s, in a May 29 OpenAI news release. “This was unthinkable before, but is now providing hope to so many families.”
More than a third of the health system’s employees use AI on a daily basis. Examples include AI to manage supply chain invoices, allocate operating room time, and provide decision support and information synthesis for physicians.
