Anthropic has unveiled Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, a data security framework designed with healthcare organizations and more than 100 other enterprise customers to let hospitals and health systems run frontier AI models without giving up control of sensitive data.
EFS pairs zero data retention with automated misuse detection, letting customers store activity logs in their own cloud accounts — such as Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage or Google Cloud Storage — under their own encryption keys and audit controls, according to a Sept. 1 news release. Anthropic said the framework grew out of feedback from security, product and compliance teams across healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, telecom, law, retail and the public sector.
“Enterprise Frontier Safeguards gives us exactly what we asked for: our logs stay in a Wells-managed environment under Wells-managed keys,” stated Anthropic Chief Information Security Officer Munish Kumar Sharma. His comments reflect a broader push by regulated industries to keep review of flagged AI activity in-house rather than with Anthropic staff.
EFS will roll out in phases starting this fall and will be supported on Claude Code, Claude Enterprise, the Claude Platform, Amazon Bedrock, Google’s Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry. Eligible customers will get zero data retention on Claude Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 in the meantime.
The move addresses a sticking point for hospitals since Anthropic introduced 30-day data retention with Fable 5, an option many regulated customers found difficult to adopt without added data controls.
