Amazon is expanding access to its AI-powered health assistant, Health AI, to customers through Amazon.com and the Amazon mobile app.
The tool, which launched earlier this year for Amazon One Medical members in the One Medical app, provides health guidance, explains medical records and helps users take actions such as booking appointments, connecting with clinicians and managing prescriptions, according to a March 10 news release.
Health AI can answer general health questions, but Amazon said it is designed to provide more personalized insights when users allow it to access their medical information, including medical history, medications and lab results through a health information exchange. The assistant can then explain results, provide context for symptoms and connect users with One Medical providers via message, video or in-person visits.
The system can also help manage prescription renewals and allow users to fill prescriptions through Amazon Pharmacy or another pharmacy of their choice, according to the release.
Amazon said Health AI is designed to support — not replace — clinicians and is not intended to diagnose or treat patients without provider involvement.
The rollout includes an introductory offer for eligible U.S. Prime members, who will receive up to five free direct-message consultations with a One Medical provider for more than 30 common conditions. After the promotional offer, telehealth visits through One Medical pay-per-visit cost $29, according to the release.
Amazon said Health AI operates within a HIPAA-compliant environment with encrypted conversations and strict access controls. The company added that protected health information from Amazon One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy will not be used to market products on Amazon’s broader retail platform or through Amazon Ads.
The company said it plans to expand Health AI availability to more U.S. customers in the coming weeks.
