5 apps that integrate with HealthKit

Apple's mobile wellness platform, HealthKit, officially launched Friday after discovery of a bug delayed its scheduled Sept. 17 launch.

The HealthKit mobile platform aggregates user-generated and sensed data and displays it in a single interface for users in a related app, Health. HealthKit is also able to share patient data with select EHR systems.

Here is a selection of five apps that integrate with HealthKit:

American Well: The consumer-facing telemedicine app now allows users to share their information stored on HealthKit with a physician during a video visit. "HealthKit is a major advance in healthcare," said Roy Schoenberg, MD, CEO of American Well. "For the first time, we can make a connection between consumer health data on your iPhone and a doctor that visits your home over video. This opens a world of opportunity, with increased access to care for people everywhere and better care of patients with chronic conditions."

Humana: HumanaVitality, the insurer's consumer-focused app designed to reward members for taking steps to improve their health, is now integrated with HealthKit. Users can authorize HealthKit to share data with HumanaVitality to earn Vitality Points, redeemable for movie tickets, music downloads and other products.

Patient IO: The Patient IO app, designed to allow providers to share personalized treatment plans with patients, now allows providers to pull relevant data from a patient's HealthKit platform and incorporate it into the care plan.

Up by Jawbone: A health and fitness app that offers users advice based on their diet and exercise habits, the new app from Jawbone does not require the use of the company's eponymous wearable fitness tracker.

WebMD for iPhone: The reference app can now analyze data in HealthKit and provide consumers with insights or recommendations through WebMD for iPhone's Healthy Target feature.
