Regardless of the type of data an organization aims to secure, there are safety nets that should be put into place before worrying about cybersecurity minutiae.
“You don’t need to worry about someone parachuting through your chimney when you don’t close the back door to your house,” Michael Coates, Twitter’s trust and information security officer, told The Wall Street Journal’s CIO Journal.
Here are three data security tips from Mr. Coates.
• Where available, turn on extra security measures for logging into accounts that access sensitive information.
• Check that all computers, laptops, tablets and other access points are up to date on the latest software, which will often include security-related updates.
• Encourage password variation between systems and accounts. Too often people use the same passwords for work and personal information.
