According to the release, two University of Miami Hospital employees may have stolen patient information and sold it to a third party. The hospital conducted the investigation based on information it received from law enforcement and found that the two employees may have been inappropriately accessing patient information from registration “face sheets,” which are patient registration-related documents containing basic identifying information, including names, addresses, dates of birth and insurance policy numbers.
After the investigation revealed the potential data breach, both employees were terminated immediately, according to the release. There has been no indication that medical records are at risk or that computer records were threatened. However, the hospital is taking all the necessary precautions to protect its patients, according to the release.
