Cost is not the primary barrier keeping Americans from weight loss drugs, despite historically high list prices and inconsistent insurance coverage, according to a March 17 Axios-Ipsos poll.
The finding is based on survey responses from a nationally representative sample of 1,225 U.S. adults polled March 6-9.
Three takeaways:
1. Among those not interested in GLP-1s, just 16% cited cost as the main reason. The most commonly cited factor for not using the medications was preferring to manage weight through diet and exercise (51%), followed by concerns about side effects (38%).
2. Still, the data show GLP-1 use continues to increase. Eighteen percent of Americans reported that they or a family member or friend is using a weight loss drug, up from 12% a year ago. About 11% said they have personally used a GLP-1.
3. The finding comes amid heightened concerns over healthcare costs more broadly. Sixty-nine percent of respondents said they are worried about potential insurance cost increases in 2026, and 68% said a 10% rate hike would negatively impact their household finances.
