Sheridan (Wyo.) Memorial Hospital seeking a potential transition to the critical access hospital designation, NPR affiliate Wyoming Public Media reported April 3.
CEO Mike McCafferty said that roughly 66% of the hospital’s patients are on public insurance such as Medicare and Medicaid, according to the report.
Mr. McCafferty said Sheridan Memorial has seen a “dramatic shift” in its payer mix, making it increasingly difficult to generate income, according to the report. He said that, over the past decade, the hospital has averaged about a 2.4% loss annually.
Sheridan Memorial is holding a pair of listening sessions with the community, after which the hospital’s leadership will determine whether to apply for the critical access designation, according to the report.
