Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, W.Va., part of Charleston, W.Va.-based Vandalia Health, plans to reopen labor and delivery services through a new agreement between Vandalia and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

The hospital closed its inpatient obstetrics delivery services in April as it worked toward critical access hospital status.

Vandalia and the school, based in Lewisburg, W.Va., have signed a letter of intent for an academic integration agreement that calls for the reopening, according to a Nov. 5 news release from Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s office. Under the agreement, the school will become Vandalia’s primary academic affiliate, with implementation beginning in phases July 1, 2027.

The partnership also includes a rural obstetrics training program based in Greenbrier County to help recruit and retain physicians. The letter of intent remains subject to final agreements and approvals.

The reopening will restore local access to deliveries that require hospital resources, including cesarean sections, epidurals and care for higher-risk pregnancies, according to the release.

The governor also announced a nearly $4 million Rural Health Transformation Program award to the school to establish a community-based birthing center, the state’s second freestanding birthing center, and to expand prenatal, postpartum and women’s health services.
