Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, W.Va., part of Vandalia Health, will end obstetrics delivery services effective May 1, citing challenges recruiting full-time clinical staff and declining birth rates in the region.
Charleston, W.Va.-based Vandalia Health said in a statement shared with Becker’s that the decision was made with patients and the community in mind and follows ongoing workforce challenges and lower birth volumes that have made the services difficult to sustain locally.
The system said it is contacting obstetrical patients to coordinate individualized care plans and ensure continuity of care with nearby hospitals, including WVU St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, W.Va., WVU Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg, W.Va., and Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center in Elkins, W.Va.
Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial will continue to provide gynecological, prenatal and postpartum care and is working toward that goal, while also planning a new facility and maintaining inpatient and outpatient services.
The closure comes as hospitals and health systems across the U.S. continue to scale back maternity services amid financial pressures, workforce shortages and declining birth rates. In 2025, Becker’s reported on 29 organizations ending maternity care.
The news also comes as Vandalia Health is restructuring into two divisions and eliminating regional CEO roles as it moves away from its North-South operating model.
The system continues to expand after its 2022 formation, when Morgantown, W.Va.-based Mon Health merged with Charleston Area Medical Center. Vandalia Health owns 14 hospitals and manages three others and expects to grow to 16 owned hospitals and two managed hospitals by late summer 2026, according to a news release shared with Becker’s earlier in March.
The restructuring also coincides with a leadership transition. Vandalia Health President and CEO Dave Ramsey plans to retire in July and Jeff Sandene, executive vice president and CFO, has been selected as his successor.
