Below are three things to know about how Walgreen’s pharmacies fared in its latest financial quarter.
1. Walgreen’s expansion of its Medicare Part D program is boosting sales in the companies U.S. pharmacy business, with year over year sales up 3.2 percent in the second quarter. The number of prescriptions filled increased 3.9 percent in the second quarter, compared to the same period of the year prior.
2. Gains in prescription sales were offset by a slight decline in over-the-counter sales on the front-end, however, where sales fell 0.3 percent year over year.
3. Both front and backend pharmacy activities were somewhat hurt by a mild cold and flu season, however, with reported flu incidence down 16 percent from last year. Walgreens pharmacies reported seeing significantly less sales of prescriptions, over-the-counter flu remedies, hand sanitizers and tissues as compared to previous years.
