Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Health is laying off about 90 employees as part of a restructuring effort.
The reduction affects about 1% of the regional nonprofit health system’s workforce and takes effect this week, a Centra spokesperson told Becker’s.
The layoffs primarily affect administrative and management areas, according to the spokesperson. Centra said about 35 affected employees are being given the opportunity to fill open positions within the organization for which they are qualified.
The health system said it continues to hire in key areas, including clinical roles such as nurses and providers.
The restructuring is part of a broader effort to strengthen the organization, reduce redundancies and improve efficiency, according to Centra. The health system also cited financial and operational pressures facing healthcare providers, including reduced government reimbursements, economic challenges, shifting demographics and evolving technologies.
Employees eligible for severance will receive support, including access to COBRA coverage, according to the health system.
