Virginia governor proposes limited Medicaid expansion

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) has proposed a plan to provide health insurance for approximately 25,000 uninsured people in Virginia, according to a Reuters report.

Under the plan, about 20,000 people who are mentally ill and approximately 5,000 children of state employees would receive insurance.

The insurance expansion plan is just one part of a program that would also help improve care for people already enrolled in Virginia's Medicaid program and help boost insurance enrollment in the state, according to the report.

Virginia is not the only state looking to an alternative Medicaid expansion plan. In August, HHS approved Pennsylvania's plan to use federal Medicaid expansion money to offer people coverage through the private insurance market.
