UPMC hospital seeks tax-exemption; region would lose $370K

UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury (Pa.), part of Pittsburgh-based UPMC, wants tax-exempt status and will be the subject of a hearing on the matter Oct. 10 in Northumberland County, according to The Daily Item.

A UPMC spokesperson told the newspaper the Sunsbury hospital, which has paid taxes to the county since 2006, has been owned by tax-exempt UPMC since 2017. The hospital's properties, covering 20 parcels, are assessed at nearly $2.4 million.

UPMC provided $44 million in community benefits to the area last year and "delivers more care to the region's poor and underserved than any other health system in the state," spokesman Tyler Wagner said.

A tax-exempt status would mean Northumberland County, the city of Sunbury and Shikellamy School District would lose more than $370,000 in annual property tax revenue.
