University of Chicago Medicine filed a certificate of need application Sept. 28 with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, moving forward with plans to build a nearly $328 million clinical laboratory in the city’s Washington Park neighborhood.
The four-story, 144,368-square-foot lab would consolidate clinical laboratory operations now spread across 14 locations and expand diagnostic capacity, according to the application. UChicago Medicine said in a statement to Becker’s that the building would bring its pathology labs, now in separate buildings across the Hyde Park campus, under one roof.
The site is expected to support about 550 jobs, including about 350 relocated positions and 200 new positions, according to the application. The system expects to complete the project by April 30, 2030.
The lab is part of a partnership with the University of Chicago and City Colleges of Chicago, which plans to build a Malcolm X College learning center on adjacent property. The center would serve up to 800 students and establish Chicago’s first dedicated clinical laboratory technician program, according to the application.
The state review board must approve the project before it can move forward.
