UnitedHealth outperforms medical sector, slightly lags among HMOs

On the coattails of UnitedHealth’s July 15 second-quarter earnings report, the insurer is placed well ahead of the medical sector, but slightly behind compared to other health maintenance organizations, analysts say.

Zacks Equity Research compared UnitedHealth’s year-to-date performance to the entire medical sector, with the insurer’s stock growing 19.68 percent this year compared to the medical sector’s 2.72 percent average decline.

However, when compared to other members of the health maintenance organization industry, UnitedHealth’s year-to-date earnings are just under par. The 19.68 percent growth is just below the 20.05 percent industry average, according to analysts.
