From posting nearly $5.5 billion in profit for the second quarter, to its Optum arm striking a partnership with Anthropic, here are 10 updates on UnitedHealth Group and its subsidiaries that Becker’s has reported since July 2:
1. UnitedHealth Group still expects a Medicare Advantage enrollment loss for 2026, but the company lowered its projection on a July 16 earnings call.
2. Shobhit Varshney was named chief AI officer at Optum. He joins from Citi, where he was global head of AI from August 2025 to July 2026.
3. Dan Kueter, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s employer and individual business, said the No Surprises Act’s independent dispute resolution process is “being exploited by select providers and select geographies,” adding about 50 basis points of incremental cost trend in 2026 and now accounting for at least 100 basis points of total commercial cost at the company.

9. Optum Financial closed its acquisition of Alegeus Technologies, a platform offering benefits administration for consumer-directed healthcare accounts.
10. UnitedHealth Group received the largest total Medicare Advantage bonus payments in 2026, pulling in $3.9 billion as total program spending reached $13.4 billion across all MA plans, according to a KFF analysis.
