Oakland, Calif.-based University of California Health recorded a 9.6 percent increase in operating revenue in fiscal year 2017 compared to the year prior, according to unaudited financial documents.

Here are three things to know about the system's financial performance in fiscal year 2017.

1. UC Health, which comprises five academic medical centers, recorded operating revenue of $11.4 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30. This is up from $10.4 billion reported in fiscal year 2016. UC Health attributed the increase to an uptick in patient volume, case complexity and contract prices.

2. Operating expenses grew to $11.1 billion in 2017, compared to $10.7 billion reported the year prior. UC Health pointed to increases related to salary, benefits and medical supplies expenses as contributing factors to the change.

3. UC Health ended fiscal year 2017 with income before other changes in net position of $283.4 million. That's compared to a loss before other changes in net positions of $316.9 million recorded in 2016.
