Tufts Medicine posts -4.2% operating margin in Q1

Burlington, Mass.-based Tufts Medicine recorded an operating loss of $31.8 million (-4.2% operating margin) in the first quarter of 2026, down from an operating loss of $28.9 million (-4.1% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Feb. 2 financial report. 

The system reported total operating revenue of $760.4 million for the three months ended Dec. 31, up from $710.7 million during the same period last year. Patient service revenue totaled $594.1 million, up from $574 million. 

Total operating expenses were $792.2 million in the quarter, up from $739.7 million last year. Salaries, wages and employee benefits totaled $422.2 million, up from $392.8 million. Supplies and other expenses were $224 million, up from $192.2 million. 

Tufts Medicine reported a net loss of $35.6 million in the quarter, down from a net loss $26.6 million last year.
