Texas hospital bills wrong patient nearly $13K

A woman incorrectly received nearly $13,000 in medical bills from Medical City Dallas due to a patient portal mix-up, according to KXAS-TV.

Tonya White told KXAS-TV Medical City Dallas sent her statements for a $10,000 hospital bill, an $800 ambulance bill and a $1,600 medical services bill.

Ms. White told the television station she was confused by the bills because they stated she had received care at Medical City Green Oaks, a psychiatric hospital in Dallas, in July. But she said she never visited the facility.

Since the bills contained her personal information, Ms. White said she believed someone else may have used her identity.

Ms. White said she contacted Medical City Dallas, but the staff refused to address the issue. Ms. White said she refused to pay the bills, which were later sent to a collections agency.

KXAS-TV contacted Medical City Dallas and sent copies of Ms. White's bills and her photo ID to the hospital.

Once the television station stepped in, Ms. White said Medical City Dallas apologized to her and attributed the mistake to a patient portal mix-up, according to the report.

Medical City Dallas told KXAS-TV it could not discuss how it obtained Ms. White's information, citing HIPAA laws, but confirmed officials were notified of a possible billing error and resolved the situation. The hospital also said it will inform the collections agency about the error so Ms. White would not be responsible for the bills.
