The web survey, a partnership between Apex and InfoTrends, involved U.S. consumers ages 18 to 75 who have visited a hospital or physician in the past year.
Here are five survey findings.
1. Eight percent of patients said they only received their healthcare bills electronically, and 25 percent said they desire the same.
2. Patients with household incomes less than $75,000 are most likely to want flexible payment plan options, according to Apex.
3. Most patients (85 percent) view a consistent healthcare billing and payment experience as important.
4. A majority of patients (nearly 70 percent) said they would be more likely to pay a medical bill in a timely manner if they received a cost estimate on the day of service.
5. Nearly 30 percent of patients said better personalized reminders about their bill would make them more likely to pay on time.
