State owes 2 Ill. hospitals $76M due to lengthening budget impasse

The state of Illinois owes Springfield’s two largest hospitals a combined $76 million for services rendered to state workers, a number that continues to escalate as the state’s budget remains unresolved, reports The State Journal-Register

The state owes Memorial Medical Center $46.3 million from the state employees’ group health insurance program in addition to $10.9 million in Medicaid bills, according to the Journal-Register. Illinois owes St. John’s Hospital $30 million under the state’s employee insurance plan.

Memorial Medical Center CEO Edgar Curtis has assured the hospital does not have plans to cut jobs or freeze hiring despite the continuing budget impasse, according to the article.
