Obama Says GOP Differences on Medicare May be “Too Wide” for Grand Bargain

Fresh from a meeting with Republican lawmakers, President Barack Obama said Republican proposals to turn Medicare into a voucher program, cut added Medicaid funding and refuse to close tax loopholes may make reaching a strong consensus on deficit reduction impossible, according to a report by ABC News.

“Ultimately, it may be that the differences are just too wide,” the president told ABC News.

He said he’s confident Congress will pass a budget — for the first time in four years — but it may lack reforms desired by both parties. “It just means that we will have missed an opportunity,” he said.
