The state proposed Medicaid cuts of roughly $2.7 billion in an effort to balance its budget. However, leveling the state’s budget may come at the expense of safety-net hospitals, such as Norwegian American Hospital, which rely partly on these funds to operate. Joe Mejia, MD, a medical director at the hospital, said cuts to Medicaid could decrease the hospital’s budget by half, according to the report.
Local healthcare workers and some politicians protested the proposed state Medicaid cuts Friday. The state budget is due by May 31.
