Rhode Island state hospital at risk of losing Medicare, Medicaid reimbursements

A Rhode Island state psychiatric hospital is at risk of losing Medicare and possibly Medicaid reimbursements if it does not address problems that have put patients in "immediate jeopardy" by Aug. 15, the Providence Journal reported May 19.

CMS said in a May 17 letter to the Eleanor Slater Hospital that it received acceptable plans for correction for many of the deficiencies cited in a January report, according to the Journal. But unannounced visits in March and April found additional noncompliance issues.

Details of those incidents were not disclosed in CMS' letter, according to the report. Previous issues included failure to complete required observation and safety checks for 17 patients, failure to provide necessary supervision to maintain safety, and failure to monitor patients placed in restraint devices to ensure physical and psychological needs were met.

The hospital is also accused of not adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Eleanor Slater Hospital has about 200 patients on two campuses, in Cranston and Burrillville, according to the report.
