Nearly half of providers surveyed upgraded or replaced their claims technology in the last year to reduce denials, according to an Oct. 28 report from Experian Health.

The efforts come as 40% of providers said 10% or more of their claims are denied, and 75% said denials are increasing.

Experian’s 2026 “State of Claims” report is based on a survey of 204 healthcare professionals in finance, billing, registration, reimbursement, claims and collections roles. The survey was conducted Aug. 5-23.

Respondents were asked how their organizations reduced denials in the last year. Here were the most common tactics:

  1. Upgraded or replaced claims technology: 48%
  2. Automated or expanded portal claim reviews: 40%
  3. (tie) Digitized registration and automated payer-policy tracking: 37%
  4. Began providing accurate estimates: 27%

Providers are also tracking different measures to gauge whether those efforts are working:

  • 31% track time spent on appeals versus amount recovered.
  • 31% track their clean claims rate.
  • 23% track their denial rate.
  • 16% track time spent on appeals only.
