Citing “strategic advances in technology,” Springfield, Mo.-based CoxHealth is eliminating 53 revenue cycle roles, a system spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s on June 17.
The cuts affect about 0.38% of CoxHealth’s workforce, the spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s. The affected employees primarily worked in roles that involved manual entry for medical coding. Advances in technology and planned streamlined workflows with those tools have automated those roles.
“Technology has taken on work that once required significant manual effort, giving our teams more capacity to focus on the people and communities we serve,” the statement said. “For CoxHealth to continue delivering on its mission, adopting new technologies, tools and processes is essential.”
Many of the affected employees will transition to new positions within the health system, and CoxHealth will provide resources to those who are departing the organization, the statement said.
As technology reshapes work, CoxHealth said it is enhancing its workforce transition and education investment program. The program includes:
- Personalized career transition support, including coaching, resume and interview assistance, and guidance on identifying new career pathways.
- Financial assistance through the CoxHealth Foundation to pursue education, certifications or training programs that lead to in-demand skills and future career opportunities.
- Direct connections to regional employers and community workforce development partners.
- Education designed to help employees further develop technology-enabled skill sets.
CoxHealth is also partnering with Mostly Serious, a Springfield-based digital services agency that specializes in software development and AI enable to offer AI training to interested employees.
“We know that periods of transition can bring uncertainty,” the statement said. “Our priority is to ensure that every affected colleague is supported through change in a way that is best for them. At the same time, we will continue to work alongside community partners to equip the workforce of the region with training and skills geared toward the future.”
