The PHC4 analyzed financial documents of the state’s 171 general acute-care hospitals from FY 2012. Here are some of the group’s major findings:

•    Operating income rose 6.3 percent year-over-year, from $2.08 billion in 2011 to $2.21 billion in 2012.

•    Operating revenue increased 4.8 percent to $39.3 billion.

•    Despite the increases in operating income, operating revenue and operating margin, total margin fell from 7.04 percent in 2011 to 5.82 percent last year. Total margin factors in nonoperating income, like investment gains/losses.

•    Hospitals’ uncompensated care grew by 6.4 percent, topping $1 billion for the first time.
