Pennsylvania hospital pauses inpatient care after payroll struggles

Sharon (Pa.) Regional Medical Center has paused inpatient services, but its emergency department is still accepting patients, a spokesperson for the health system said in an Oct. 29 statement shared with Becker’s.

“We continue to explore all available options for the hospital’s future, and no final decisions have been made,” the statement said. “If inpatient care is needed, they will be stabilized and transferred.”

Sharon Regional has missed its last two pay cycles, with the first on Oct. 9 delayed by the Columbus Day holiday, and the second on Oct. 23.

The spokesperson said Sharon Regional is pursuing every possible opportunity to secure funding for the hospital and to meet payroll obligations.

“We recognize the serious impact this has had on our employees and remain focused on resolving outstanding payroll obligations as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said.

In early 2025, Sharon Regional closed under its previous owner, Dallas-based Steward Health Care, which sought Chapter 11 protection in May 2024. The hospital then reopened in late May 2025 under Pasadena, Calif.-based Tenor Health Foundation, a hospital turnaround company, as Sharon Regional Health System.

Tenor has expanded its presence in Pennsylvania this year. On Feb. 1, the company purchased three Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems hospitals for $33 million, plus a $15 million promissory note. The sale included Regional Hospital of Scranton (186 beds) and Moses Taylor Hospital (122 beds) — both in Scranton, Pa. — and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital (369 beds).
