Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health reported an operating income of $77.6 million (2.1% margin) through the first three quarters of 2026, up from $60.4 million (1.8% operating margin) during the same period last year, according to its May 26 financial report.
“Penn State Health’s strong performance through the third quarter reflects both the growing trust patients place in our system and the disciplined focus of our teams on delivering high-quality, efficient care,” Tracy Moyer, executive vice president and CFO for Penn State Health, said in a May 27 news release shared with Becker’s. “We are encouraged by the continued growth in patient volumes and revenues, along with improvements in our operating margin, which position us well to sustain our momentum and invest in the future of healthcare across the communities we serve.”
Five things to know:
1. Penn State Health reported a total operating revenue of $3.7 billion for the nine months ended March 31, up from $3.3 billion during the same period last year. Net patient service revenue was $3.3 billion, up from $3.1 billion.
2. The system’s operating expenses were $3.6 billion through the third quarter of 2026, up 9.7% from $3.3 billion during the same period last year, driven in part by workforce and patient care resources investments. Salaries and benefit expenses were $2.1 billion, up from $1.9 billion. Medical supply and drug costs were $740.9 million, up from $656.8 million and purchased services increased from $367.6 million to $398.1 million.
3. Penn State Health’s net income was $158.6 million in the first three quarters of 2026, up from $107.7 million during the same period in 2025.
4. Penn State Health had 118 days cash on hand on March 31, 2026, up from 112 on March 31, 2025. Its long-term debt was $937.1 million.
5. The system’s admissions increased from 44,891 to 45,460 through the first three quarters of 2026. Total surgeries grew 2.9% to 34,679 cases, births increased 13.8% to 3,419 and outpatient visits increased to more than 1.31 million.
