Under the deal, all BCBSNC patients will pay a single, fixed price of knee replacement surgeries at OrthoCarolina clinics. OrthoCarolina will be tasked with handling those fixed payments and ensuring care is coordinated. The health insurer expects the contract can save 10 to 30 percent on knee replacement costs.
BCBSNC has aggressively promoted and engaged providers in bundled payment contracts. In February, it expanded its bundled payment deal with Triangle Orthopaedic Associates and North Carolina Specialty Hospital in Durham to include hip replacement surgeries.
BCBSNC also has a knee replacement bundled payment deal with CaroMont Health in Gastonia, N.C.
