The legislature approved $10.6 million in funding for HHS and $23.4 million for the Oregon Health Authority. Both amounts were less than what the agencies requested, roughly $13.1 million and $38.6 million, respectively.

Some of the deficit may be filled after the legislature convenes for its next session in February, according to the article.

The late Sen. Alan Bates (D-Medford) diverted some $40 million in funding into a “special purpose” fund, intended for use under special circumstances. However, agency leaders must make a persuasive case in order to garner additional funds, according to the article.
