The study analyzed patient, expenditure, revenue and staffing data for every hospital in the state of Missouri. An exact timeframe for the data was not reported. Results showed that Missouri hospitals are responsible for creating more than 265,000 jobs in the state and increasing gross state product by $18.8 billion.
Researchers also found construction projects from Missouri hospitals’ capital expenses created an additional 21,000 jobs and generated another $1.2 billion increase in GSP. In addition, medical tourism accounted for approximately 850,000 out-of-state patients, an additional 3,000 jobs and $124 million in GSP.
