Nuvance hospital looks to shutter inpatient mental health services

Norwalk (Conn.) Hospital, part of Danbury, Conn.-based Nuvance Health, wants to end its inpatient mental health services as the hospital looks to refer patients to Danbury Hospital and boost its own outpatient mental health services, The Hour reported Dec. 14.

In January, the hospital submitted an application to the Office of Health Strategy to close inpatient services, and the hospital discussed the plan with the Office of Health Strategy Dec. 14.

Norwalk’s inpatient mental health unit has underperformed for years, according to Nuvance Chair of Psychiatry Charles Herrick, MD.

The move to close Norwalk’s inpatient mental health services comes as the hospital plans for a $220 million renovation and expansion project to be completed in 2026.
