Butler, Pa.-based Independence Health System is laying off 81 workers this week, taking the number of job cuts at the organization up to 151 so far in 2025.

The workforce cuts, which equate to about 2% of the system’s workforce, are part of broader cost-containment efforts as Independence Health continues to battle “unrelenting and unprecedented financial and operational pressures — both within healthcare and across the broader economy,” Kelley Skoloda, chief marketing and communications officer, said in an April 9 statement shared with Becker’s

The five-hospital system said it has cut its operating losses nearly in half from 2023 to 2024 but must continue to make “difficult but necessary decisions” to secure “the long-term strength and stability of our organization,” according to the statement.

“Not acting decisively in the face of our financial challenges would jeopardize the care we provide and the future we are working so hard to protect,” the system said. “We owe it to our patients and our communities to preserve and strengthen the health system relied on by so many for expert care.”

Independence Health launched in 2023 through the merger of Butler (Pa.) Health System and Greensburg-based Excela Health.
